Are Plantation Shutters Right for Your Home?

In short: yes! At Venetian Blind Carpet One Floor & Home, we create our shutters to fit your exact specifications including measurements, louver size, and material. We make sure our plantation shutters are the exact right fit for your home.

But before purchasing plantation shutters, consider the following:

  1. What room needs window treatments?
  2. What color are your walls? It’s worthwhile to bring a paint swatch to our showroom to see how the wall color and plantations shutter color look side by side.
  3. Do you have sufficient window depth for plantation shutters? Measurements are helpful.
  4. Do your windows face east or west and how might this affect which plantation shutters you choose?
  5. How will shutters look from the exterior of your home?

Which Plantation Shutter is Right for Your Home?

Venetian Blind Carpet One Floor & Home carries the full line of Hunter Douglas plantation shutters made of wood, vinyl, or wood composite.

Wood Plantation Shutters

Wood shutters add warmth and beauty to your home providing a traditional style. Real wood plantation shutters offer the naturally fine texture of real wood.

  • Hardwood shutters made of either basswood or poplar – known for exceptional sturdiness and resistance to shrinking or warping
  • The drying process adheres to strict quality standards to guarantee the straightest possible wood components
  • Use strong dovetail construction for holding panels together
  • Finished in a multi-coat process to create high luster and long-lasting durability, requiring minimal care
  • Finished in your choice of paint or stain with 35 available options
  • Louvers are available at 2 ½, 3 ½, or 4 ½
  • Shutters made to widths of 7 to 312 inches and heights of 12 to 116 inches

Composite Plantation Shutters

While wooden shutters offer a beautiful aesthetic, real hardwood comes with an expensive price tag. Customers can avoid the large price tag of real hardwood with shutters made with composite materials replicating the look of wood. Composite shutters offer protection against sun and heat while also lasting many years.

  • Wood composite material co-extruded with polypropylene coating for a quality product built to last
  • Low-luster finish replicates the warmth and character of solid wood
  • Grain-like finish mimics the beautiful look of genuine wood
  • Dovetail construction holds panels together with interlocking components
  • Designed to resist fading, cracking, and peeling
  • Impervious to moisture, perfect for high-humidity areas including kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms
  • Rigid composite construction resists flexing
  • Designed for durability, ideal for high-traffic areas
  • Louvers are available at 2 ½, 3 ½, or 4 ½
  • Shutters made to the width of 7 to 288 inches, the height of 12 to 116 inches

Polysatin Plantation Shutters

Polysatin plantation shutters are a great, economical choice for hot and humid climates.

  • UV-resistant polysatin prevents warping, cracking, fading, chipping, and peeling even when exposed to intense sunlight and moisture
  • Lifetime guarantee that shutters will never warp, crack, fade, chip, peel or discolor
  • Water and mildew resistant
  • Specially treated to create a look of finely painted shutters with a matte finish
  • Interior aluminum bracing and resin blocks add strength
  • Motorization available
  • Louvers are available at 2 ½, 3 ½, or 4 ½
  • Shutters made to the width of 7 to 289 inches and heights of 8 7/8 to 120 inches

Which Plantation Shutter is Right for Your Room?

Living Room: Wood plantation shutters look beautiful in all common family areas. Choose a larger louver to let in more light.

Bedrooms: Wood plantation shutters are an amazing addition to the bedrooms in your home. Smaller slats may be selected for additional privacy in bedrooms.

Kitchen: Choose composite wood shutters for this high-traffic, high moisture area. Wood plantation shutters can, however, still be used in the kitchen with a special treatment to withstand moisture.

Bathroom: The smallest wood slats should be chosen for bathrooms for maximum privacy. Choose composite wood shutters for this high-moisture area.

Making Decisions for Your Plantation Shutters:

What size louver?

Slats, known as louvers, come in 2 ½, 3 ½, and 4 ½ inch widths. Choosing the correct width of the louver makes a difference in the look of your home. Choosing the louver size depends on the amount of light you want to let in, your desired level of maintenance, and your favorite style.

Smaller windows work best with a smaller louver size – 2 ½ inches – to maintain correct proportionality. This size of louver also allows for more privacy. However, smaller louvers are not as easy to clean as larger slat sizes which can be wiped more quickly.

Wider plantation shutter – 3 1/2 inches – louvers offer a grander feel, making larger windows look bigger and allowing more light when opened. The widest louver option – 4 ½ inches – is preferred for windows with fantastic views.

What shape?

While horizontal louvers are the most popular, other designs are available. These include:

  • Horizontal
  • Vertical
  • Sunburst
  • Arches
  • Angles
  • Circles
